Breast-reduction surgery is usually associated with women. But men sometimes want the procedure too. Gynecomastia surgery is the correction of overdeveloped or enlarged breasts in men to flatten and enhance the contours of their chest.
If you’re considering gynecomastia surgery, know that we at the office of Walker Plastic Surgery are committed to providing all of our patients with the excellent care and attention they deserve. During your initial consultation, you and one of our board-certified plastic surgeons will ask you what you want to be accomplished and answer all of your questions. The doctor will then evaluate your situation and explain your options clearly and concisely.
Gynecomastia can be due to hormonal changes, heredity, former obesity or the use of certain medications. This condition can make men feel very self-conscience and embarrassed. Some men hide their condition by not partaking in physical intimacy or activities such as sports during which they must bare their chests.
Typical symptoms of gynecomastia are an excess of fat in the area, the development of too much glandular tissue or a surplus of breast skin.
In acute cases of gynecomastia, the heft of excess breast tissue may make the breasts drop and enlarge the areola (the dark skin that surrounds the nipple). If this is the situation, the location and size of the areola can be surgically enhanced and superfluous skin can be taken away.
Ideal candidates for gynecomastia surgery are men whose circumstances can’t be corrected by other medical treatment, healthy individuals without a serious illness or healing disorder, nonsmokers, those with positive and realistic attitudes about their surgical goal and are the normal weight for their body type.
Don't hesitate to call Dr. Walker's office for a complementary consultation to further discuss options and help you reach your goals!
